Abstract

This study investigates the pedagogical practices employed by Islamic Education (PAI) teachers to nurture students’ affection for the Qur’an through an elementary-level Tahfidz program. The program faces several challenges, including memorization fatigue, students’ limited retention abilities, and academic demands, which may weaken their long-term engagement with the Qur’an. A qualitative descriptive case study design was adopted, with data gathered through participatory observations, semi-structured interviews involving four PAI teachers and ten students, as well as a review of tahfidz assessment records. Data analysis followed the interactive framework developed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The results reveal three key findings. First, teachers implemented a humanistic and holistic pedagogical approach by combining flexible Talaqqi-Muraja’ah techniques, Qur’anic storytelling (Qashash al-Qur’an), and emotional encouragement. Second, the use of reward-based positive reinforcement together with outdoor learning activities proved effective in minimizing students’ memorization fatigue. Third, consistent communication and collaboration between teachers and parents, facilitated through both printed and digital monitoring logbooks, strengthened students’ memorization practices at home. The study concludes that tahfidz instruction grounded in care, motivation, and comprehension of Qur’anic values is more successful in fostering a genuine love for the Qur’an than approaches that prioritize memorization outcomes alone.
